By Richard Romero
Special to the Ahwatukee Foothills News

Heart, an American rock band that rose to fame in the 1970s led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, will grace Phoenix with their musical presence next week at the Celebrity Theatre.

Ann (vocals) and Nancy (guitar and vocals) will launch their 2009 U.S. tour on Thursday, Feb. 5 for Phoenix fans in a show scheduled to start at 8 p.m. at the theater, located at 440 N. 32nd St., four blocks south of the Loop 202. Michael Grimm is set to open the show.

Tickets are priced at $50, $75 and $100, according to an official media release, and are now on sale at the Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com.

Heart has been in the music business for 30-plus years and the band has seen more than 20 Top 40 hits that include "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man." The band has also branched out to a younger generation of fans with various singles being showcased in the Guitar Hero video game franchise.

Alycia Klein, general manager at the Celebrity Theatre, said nearly three-quarters of the concert's tickets have been sold, and she predicts the average age in the audience to be between 35 and 40.

Klein displayed her overall enthusiasm for the event.

"I have worked here for over 18 years, and they are one of the best shows I have ever seen."

Grace Slick

1/9/09

Lovesheart has a Youtube channel with probably the best collection of Heart videos online there is. Today I came home from work and noticed a new video had been added and its Grace Slick, Mickey Thomas (of Jefferson Airplane/Starship), and of course Ann Wilson laying down the back up vocals to their hit song What About Love?

Grace is one of my favorite singers of all time. Just seeing this footage gives me goose bumps. Go to the Lovesheart youtube channel here.

Burris: He's a 'Magic Man'...
by Matt Lewis
Political Machine

Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band "Heart" are the voice of a new generation of politicians. ... At least, it seems their songs from the 1970s and '80s somehow tapped into the 21st century political zeitgeist ....

After Sarah Palin's nickname "Sarah Barracuda" caught on, the song became an anthem for Republicans (Palin first earned the nickname on the basketball court). The tune was played repeatedly at the RNC convention in MN, and even prompted the Wilson's to demand the McCain campaign quit playing it.

Just when I thought the Heart hoopla was over, during a press conference earlier this week, Roland Burris -- who was appointed by Blago to fill Obama's senate seat -- actually said the words: "I am the Magic Man." This, of course, immediately reminded me of the "Heart" song, "Magic Man."

It is unclear if Heart is launching an unorthodox PR campaign to revive their old songs (via mentions by political candidates) -- or if this is all merely an odd coincidence. It is also unclear whether or not Heart is experiencing any sort of resurgence of radio air time, based on this "product placement."

Either way, any day now, I'm expecting a politician -- possibly Bill Clinton -- to go "crazy on you" and publicly utter the words: "All I want to do is make love to you"....link

Barracuda on American Idol Promo

And yet another singer has decided to take a stab at a Heart song, this time Barracuda! I must say, she actually killed it, and in a good way. It's only a few seconds long but hopefully we will get to see the entire audition and find out if she can hit those glass shattering high notes a la Ann Wilson. Check it out!

Heart Makes Times Herald Top 10

1/3/09

The top 10 local concerts of 2008
Times Herald-Record
January 2, 2009

2. Cheap Trick, Heart and Journey, Aug. 30, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Bethel, NY — Arnel Pineda, the diminutive 40-year-old new lead singer for Journey, goes from small-club cover-band singer to rock-star frontman, dazzling a sold-out, season-ending crowd of 15,000. But Heart made a case for headline status, with Ann Wilson leading her older sister Nancy through their mega-hits. The night began with Cheap Trick rocking the stirring early crowd with late-1970s/early '80s hits. Lead singer Robin Zander wooed and comical guitarist Rick Nielsen changed instruments more than Cher changes outfits.

The number 1 concert was The Jonas Brothers. However, we all know who their influences are!

Carole McClellan

1/2/09

I recently received a wonderful email from clothing designer Carole McClellan.

"I was researching archives of my designs and was delighted to see that you blogged a party that I had in Dec 2007 with a photo of a leather jacket I designed and made for Ann Wilson."

In the '70s, Carol McClellan was at the forefront of the leather jacket revolution — everyone had to have one, and she was one of the few people in Seattle making them. She was discovered by Ann Wilson of Heart, then scooped up and taken on tour. From there, her work took off as she became a designer for celebrities and those in their universe. She returned to Seattle and opened her own space. (Vanessa McGrady, Special to NWsource)

Carol McClellan grew up on her family's farm outside of Jerome but gave up the farm country to design clothes in Seattle. Photo courtesy of Carol McClellan.

"This is a photo of me (Carole McClellan) taken circa 1979 with some of Ann's stage clothing I made for her and we had revolving for the tours at the time. My hometown newspaper Times News in Twin Falls Idaho was doing a piece on my work and this was shot on my parents farm. Note the black velvet dress on the left. It is the one that she is wearing on the intro video you have playing when she is walking from the backstage area to the stage. The other one is that leather zipper jacket you posted before we changed the white rose to the red one currently on it to this day."

Her work came to the attention of Seattle's Ann Wilson, of the nationally popular rock group, Heart, who called and asked McClellan to make two leather dresses for her, and then some in fabric. McClellan ended up doing most of the costuming for the group for the next five years. (Marllyn Kirkby, Seattle Times Style Editer 1982)

When Lead singer Ann Wilson prances on stage, splendid in a black velvet tunic studded with Aurora Borealis rhinestones, Ms. McClellan watches anxiously from the audience to make sure the sparkle from the gems is bright enough. (Times News, Twin Falls Idaho, 1979)
"I designed and made this for Ann for the Bebe Le Strange tour. It is a pleated Fortuny like hammered satin textile. It is one of my favorties and a rare photo! She does look awesome! Thanks for the memory."
