Songwriter Sue Ennis Praises New Heart Album

3/22/10

Heart collaborator and songwriter Sue Ennis shares her thoughts on the new Heart album Red Velvet Car.

"I just heard the new album this week. I wanted to drop by and tell you all that: IT IS MIND BLOWING. All you need to know is that your July (release time) is going to be a euphoric month as you play this record over and over. Speaking as a fan, I think there are at least 4 new songs that rank among the best songs the band has ever recorded. It's the right album at the right time and I'm completely out-of-my-mind-in-love with the songs and the production. BTW, I only had a very, very tiny hand in the album so it's OK if I rave about it.Still doubtful? I have NEVER before come on this board to freak out about work my friends have done but I'm stepping out in public this time. (Check me out on Twitter!)

Longtime fans: your dreams have been answered. New fans: you're in for something very special. Mind blowing!"

Sue Ennis is a Seattle songwriter whose songs include Classic Rock radio staples Straight On, Even It Up and Dog and Butterfly. She has co-written over 65 songs for the rock band Heart. Sue Ennis is a member of the band The Lovemongers, formed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, in the early 1990s. They recorded two albums, "Whirligig" and "Here is Christmas," but never officially broke up.

Vancouver Sun Ann Wilson Interview

Following their Heart, one more time

Ann and Nancy Wilson return to their rock roots: Vancouver, where they formed the band that would sell 30 million albums
By Graeme McRano
Special To The Sun

When Ann Wilson hitchhiked from Seattle to Vancouver in 1971, she couldn't have predicted that the band she was about to form with her sweetheart, Mike Fisher -already here dodging the Vietnam War draft -would, over the next several decades, sell more than 30-million albums worldwide and produce 21 top-40 hits.

Why would she? She was just following her heart.

A trio of Yanks soon followed: Steve Fossen and Mike's brother, Roger; and Ann's sister, Nancy, who would subsequently become romantically involved with Roger.

So, fair to say that fluttering hearts found the first beats of Heart.

"Oh my God, coming back to Vancouver is just about the same as coming back to Seattle," says Ann. "I call them both about equal because we started the band up in Vancouver, and everything just kind of went out from there in the beginning.

"I'm really looking forward to it. I'm kind of on pins and needles about it, because that was home, where we were all poverty-stricken and playing in the basement learning about everything, I mean that was our school, our rock school up there."

Heart's also got a new album called Red Velvet Car, that's slated to drop in July.

"Songwriting used to be really hard for me," Ann says. "I don't know why. I guess I was really shy and was scared to tell people my ideas, afraid of being judged. But now, especially on this last album, working with Nancy and [producer] Ben Mink, who's from Vancouver, songwriting just became really easy and fun.

"Now we have these ten songs. And I love them. Some of them are real tearjerkers, because they're very, very personal. So it was a feat to pull them out, but it's great to listen to them.

"It's really been an incredible thing. It's taken a lot of luck and timing and all the people who have helped us out over the years. And we work really hard. But I tell you what, there's a big reward in that. When we're touring, when we're up there on stage, and afterwards, when you've done it, that's the best I feel all day.

"That's being in the mix. In the bread dough."

Victoria, BC Review

Band shows it still has heart
By Adrian Chamberlain
Times Colonist

Ann Wilson had the right idea. Addressing 3,000-plus of the faithful in Victoria Monday night, she congratulated us Canucks on winning the U.S./Canada Olympic hockey game.

“It was awesome and boy, it had to go that way,” said Heart’s lead vocalist, resplendent in a purple velvet jacket, shaking her trademark mane of black curls.

And then, fittingly, the band launched into Kick It Out, a hard-driving girl-power rocker about living life to its fullest and other fun stuff.

Heart Debuts New Music at EMP

(The new album cover? Thanks Paul in Tacoma!)

Heart rocked the crowd Friday night at the EMP in Seattle, debuting new songs from their upcoming album Red Velvet Car. Heart was joined on stage by special guests Allison Krauss and Ben Mink. Here are some comments from Heart Mongers that were at the show, along with the set list.

It's confirmed Sand will be on the album - which they did tonight - my first time ever hearing it live, if there was a dry eye in the house I'd be amazed. Nancy, Ann, and Allison (Krauss) sang These Dreams. - Snoqueen

"Hey You" is a song that Nancy said took her about 10 years to write, "the kind of song that burns a hole in your back pocket". Great Dylanesque lyrics and Nancy plays autoharp! - ibrian

"WTF" is a driving rocker that reminded me of "Barracuda" in some ways. The lyric has references to crossing and burning bridges. Ann really wailed on this one. - timestar78

"Red Velvet Car" -- the title track -- was great. Ann described it as being a "soul ambulance that comes to get you when you're really down." Producer Ben Mink joined the band onstage to play violin. - timestar78

"Sinfonia's March" was interesting. Nancy played mandolin in the intro and it reminded me of a "Sylvan Song" type of feel. Craig played 12-string and Allison Krauss and Ben Mink played dueling violins. Ann said playing the new songs was like sharing their "brand new babies." And if these songs are any indication, I'd say we are in for a big treat with this album!
- timestar78

Set List:
Barracuda
Never
Kick It Out
Straight On
Love Alive
Mistral Wind
Back To Avalon
These Dreams
WTF - New song
Hey You - New song
Red Velvet Car - New song
Sifonia's Mark - New song
What About Love
Alone
Love Reign O'er Me
Crazy On You

Encores
Sand
Your Long Journey (Allison Krauss song)
There You Go Again - New song
Magic Man

Red Velvet Car is slated for release in May. The album will have more of a rock edge to it with a few ballads thrown in for good measure. The album was produced in LA by Ben Mink who also produced Ann Wilson's solo album Hope & Glory. Krauss was also one of the guests on Ann's solo album, lending her sweet vocals on the Neil Young track War of Man. Krauss and the Wilsons switched things up with Krauss singing These Dreams, and Heart doing Your Long Journey.

Here is some audio from the show. This is an audience recording so the sound is somewhat shaky. See some video from the show here. (thanks Paul!)

EMP|SFM Sky Church DVD Taping Tonight

Tonight Heart takes the stage at EMP|SFM's Sky Church in Seattle, and will be performing songs from their new album, Red Velvet Car. This show is also being recorded for a DVD. So all the Heart Mongers that are going better put on their smiles and get ready to rock for the camera!

According to the Times Colonist Heart just completed work on their upcoming album. Red Velvet Car was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Vancouver's Ben Mink. Wilson says most of the disc's 10 tunes are "really hard rock or uptempo." (yes!!!)

Radio 2.0 has listed Red Velvet Car on their site with a release date sometime in May.

Abbotsford News reported that the new album is something their long-time fans and newer listeners will appreciate. The 10-song album has seven up-tempo, rock-heavy tunes, and three ballads.

While their goals have shifted from gold records to finding happiness, they are hoping they still have what it takes to create music “that gets people off.”

Thanks Heart Monger Seattleboy for the scoops! You can also read about it on the Heartlinker.
